Australia@aussie.zone•Personal loans booming as cost of living drives Australians to borrow record amountsEnglish
3·1 day agoYou/we need to speak up about this.
It also reminds me of sports betting and its apps which make it easy and addictive to use them.

15·1 day agoAs an older person I feel sadness that young people cannot see how beautiful and interesting they are in all their individuality (we have to communicate this to them) and I also feel anger that our current culture is doing them damage.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•Garden friend or foe? Putting common 'pests' to the test
2·2 days agoYou’d be surprised how some people behave towards our wildlife if their precious garden is ‘disturbed’ by our native animals. This is more so the case in the outer suburbs and regional areas. Another show of stupidity is cutting down mature trees and understorey native vegetation on their properties, leaving little shelter and food sources and so displacing and/or starving animals.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Penny Wong says she believes Israeli soldiers sexually assaulted and abused Australian women after Gaza flotilla
2·2 days agoThe Australian Government just put our passport prices up again and rightly expects us all to respect and value citizenship. Well, I reckon we citizens are entitled to ask for the same commitment in return.
Because if the killing of an Australian aid worker, sexual abuse of Australian citizens, and the destruction of Australian war graves doesn’t trigger meaningful action, then it’s fair to ask: What exactly does Australian citizenship protect us from?
Great points made here: https://www.lyrebirddreaming.com/post/question-for-penny-wong-is-australian-citizenship-worth-anything?cid=041a981b-853b-4355-a7b0-1182c033c5f6

Overseas News@aussie.zone•Is Israel planning to reoccupy the Gaza Strip? This is what’s happening behind the ‘yellow line’
3·3 days agoAlthough I am not indigenous, I’d like to say that Aboriginal Australians might have been ‘subdued’ but their cultural memory is strong and they have never been defeated nor their culture totally erased. Damaged, yes, but not erased and getting stronger with time.

Overseas News@aussie.zone•Is Israel planning to reoccupy the Gaza Strip? This is what’s happening behind the ‘yellow line’
3·3 days agoCultural memory doesn’t die unless we have some world-wide catastrophe. Even if they ‘choked Hamas out’ of Gaza, they, or another resistance group, would rise.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•The environmental cost of datacentres is rising. Is it time to quit AI?
4·3 days agoI want to opt out as much as I can from using AI and adding to its gargantuan requirements for energy and water because this affects us all in the end.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•The environmental cost of datacentres is rising. Is it time to quit AI?
2·3 days agoAustralia is not at the stage of the US in terms of community action re the social license of data centres. At least, I haven’t found such a community group. Imo we are more apathetic here unless we are being stoked up by fossil fuel interests. Anyway, aside from my narky opinion, thank you for your thoughtful response. I am no longer in the workforce so I am relieved to say this enormous issue does not affect me as it does those whose jobs may be on the line or who are obliged to work with AI whether they want to or not. But privacy and personal agency is at risk for all of us.
What I have found is a very recent report by the Climate Council, an independent Australian NGO. The report, CLOUDED FUTURE: MANAGING THE RISKS OF THE DATA CENTRE BOOM outlines clearly a lot of issues that governments need to consider and act on. You may be interested in looking at it in case it can provide any material that can help you in your own action: https://www.climatecouncil.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CC-Report-Data-Centres.pdf

3·3 days agoWe need to make a lot more noise and get answers from all politicians an what they intend to do, no matter what political allegiance they have. It will show what they’re about. We have a very high level of lethal violence against children and women and this provokes more violence into the future.

Aussie Enviro@aussie.zone•“Cathedral of nature” to be felled for dual-occupancy development
1·4 days agoTotally agree. It really looks like people’s values and our understanding of what’s important to face the future have been dumped. It appears we want to destroy the natural world and many of us along with it. I am also so angry when I see what our children are already facing and what they’ll have to deal with in the future.

Overseas News@aussie.zone•SHORT VIDEO: UN announces Israeli entities on UN blacklist for sexual violence in conflict zones
4·5 days agoI agree with you. The positive imo is that it gives the reporting credibility so that opposition and incremental pressure against the regime increases from more people. The truth is important, Those who continue their silence in the face of so many crimes against humanity will be seen for what they are. Just moving too slow.

Not surprised at all.
