It is cheaper to have a public utility manage power, telecom, trains, and roads than to allow private industry to manage those. It is cheaper to simply not have a military than to have one. It is cheaper to bar pedophiles from government than suffer the effects of their blackmail.

Product recalls happen all the time. Usually the manufacturers and distributors and retailers manage to get them out of the supply chain before they hit the shelves. That’s the system working as intended, and it does a really good job of keeping people safe.
What we’re seeing here is that system breaking down because of the erosion of public trust. Because they don’t know they are getting truthful information, because they don’t know who or what to trust.
