Philosophy@lemmy.world•What Are Your Thoughts on Tolstoy's Personal, Social, and Divine Conceptions of Life?English
1·7 days agoErich Fromm expressed similar ideas, though far more well-developed, in The Art of Loving. Can’t help but feel that anyone who thinks that hunter-gatherers were less communally oriented than people these days hasn’t met a single capitalist in their life.

Europe@feddit.org•Francis Fukuyama: Don’t Back Down, EuropeEnglish
3·12 days agoTo be fair, I’m not sure he really is living it down. In his recent book he recommended more nationalism as the solution to the political tensions currently present in Europe.

Linux@programming.dev•Question about resurrecting a discontinued distro
4·15 days agoWith the caveat that I’m just a random idiot on the internet who has never even considered building a custom distro — seems like the most reliable way to go about it would be to build such a thing on top of a declarative distro such as Guix or NixOS. It should require less maintenance effort to make sure all packages are compatible as they’re updated, in case you decide to publish your work. Nixbook is one example of this. Someone on Reddit was also making a case for reproducible builds in scientific computing. A Docker container could also work if you can do without a GUI.

It’s not impenetrable, but let’s be honest, who’s crazy enough to break into the house with a moat?
Bad news, buddy…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are epitaphs on headstones so brief, minimal, and contain little to no biographical information about the deceased?
1·1 month agoYou’re thinking about what these people mean to you, not what they mean to the people who buried them. When you’re close to someone famous, they’re not that impressive guy with hundreds of achievements, they’re just dad, brother, son, beloved. I wouldn’t want to be dehumanized by someone turning my headstone into a CV.
As for Zappa, he was a weird guy. You can tell by listening to any of his albums. Plenty of reason to love his music.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are epitaphs on headstones so brief, minimal, and contain little to no biographical information about the deceased?
3·1 month agoDo we really need the dead bragging about their achievements the same as the living?
I’d give it at least a few days. Updates haven’t broken anything major for me before, but have had to troubleshoot some annoying issues in my DE and having others posting about the same issue does make it easier.
