Cinderella?
It’s not Harry Potter? Damn. Hmmm… is it the book people theorize JKR was inspired by? There was such a thing, was there? Or am i just making shit up?
Iirc, there were several books that she likely took inspiration from, ranging from things like a secret platform at kings cross, I don’t remember the name of that one, a wizard of earthsea is possibly an inspiration for her whole wizard boarding school schtick, though to be honest, I’d be genuinely surprised if JK read a lot of Le Guin and came away with her politics.
But no, it’s neither of those. This one came slightly after HP, but it’s very, very different. Posted the answer in upside down text in another reply, if you want to check, or you can keep guessing lol
a secret platform at kings cross
This might have been The Secret of Platform 13, very fun book. She probably got the Dursleys from there too, and maybe Dumbledore and Hagrid. Its Wikipedia page has a section about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_of_Platform_13
Was it Groosham Grange? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groosham_Grange#Similarities_to_Harry_Potter_series
