Trump promised to raid Chicago on Tuesday yet I have seen a single news story about this since it was first brought up Sunday. It is now Wednesday. So did they do it or was it just more hot air from Trump and co?

Same thing that happened to the “migrant caravan”

Just a bunch of 'here’s this for your racism serotonin" bluster from talking heads that have no real acumen

No, we shouldn’t just dismiss this. My friend is a teacher in Arizona and she had some sort of agents come to their school and pull kids out of classes. Allegedly they were going to use them as “bait” to get the parents, but the school was being tight lipped about it when the teachers were asking questions.

Dismissing this shit the first time around is how so many children’s whereabouts are still lost in the ICE system today. Don’t dismiss this as just conjecture just because the news isn’t reporting it.

They may not be happening in Chicago, but they are very much happening in Phoenix. I’m not informed enough specifically to say whether Chicago or any of the other listed cities were just a feint or if they have been delayed for other reasons. Its also likely that many state and city officials are doing their best to put roadblocks in the way right now.

As someone who lived in Phoenix during Arizona’s SB1070 raids, don’t expect news coverage to keep up. Even outlets trying their hardest to stay on top of it are under-resourced, and it can take time for civilian footage from the scene to get vetted. It’ll likely get better the more awareness is spread and once the strategy Trump’s administration is more well understood.

Also a good idea to keep an eye on places like Bluesky, Lemmy, Pixelfed and (I know, but larger user base still) Reddit for civilian footage. Democracy dies in silence and the administration knows that. We can’t necessarily rely on traditional media to be allowed to cover this stuff. We need to rely on each other in whatever side channels we can communicate freely on.

it didn’t happen, or it did. it shouldn’t happen or it should have. whatever trump’s base thinks the most convenient thing to say, they’ll say it. and anything else is fake news.

Everything these idiots say publicly is bluster. They don’t have the resources for these deportations they are planning. There aren’t enough ice agents in the entire country to clear out the undocumented immigrants in one city. It’s illegal for the military to assist. It’s illegal for them to try to force local PD or sheriff’s to assist.

Edit: There are around 20,000 border and ICE agents. Most of those are assigned to the southwest border. The NYPD has 33,000 officers, Chicago PD has about 14,000, LAPD 9,0000. Even if you somehow got 10,000 of those border and ICE agents in one city without hurting border operations, it would take them years to find and deport all the undocumented immigrants in just one city.

There was some action across the country, one of which even ended up with a border office getting killed. Honestly, I think the extreme Chicago cold kept them at bay. To my understanding, these raids are being done on a voluntary basis by the agents, there’s no order forcibly deploying them. For all the shit-talk the yokels in Alabama and Georgia can muster, I don’t think any of them wanted to deal with windchills of -20f.

i just dug around a little to see before seeing your post. apparently nothing happened yesterday in chicago.

so either it was too cold, or they realized there wasn’t enough ‘easy’ targets in that city to make a big enough media splash.

Yeah I did some digging too didn’t find much. So much for largest immigration raids in American history. I told my brother that all bullshit to get votes. I’m sure there will be some but nothing my brother and dad had been bragging about.

Either that or they are waiting to build the camps first. Still not ready to drop my guard.

They said it was because of “media leaks”. Translation: we don’t want anyone looking at how we conduct the raids or who gets hurt, we just want a really big perp walk afterward.

I believe there were rumors based on comments about Chicago in response to the mayor’s comments, but no official statement saying that Chicago was the first sanctuary city to be descended upon.

It is my understanding is that at this point they have directed ICE to start going down their list of illegal immigrants that have committed serious crimes. My assumption is that they have to get a strategy and assets prepared to do large scale raids, which they could not have formally done until after inauguration. I also assume they will be weeks or months away from large operations and they will be gathering a large mobile task force that will hop between cities while local offices are gathering lists and information about subjects that will be targeted.

I expect Chicago to be the first city to see a large operation just as a “fuck you” to the mayor, but other sanctuary cities that have said they won’t cooperate are also prime targets.

They directed ICE to target people who are accused of serious crimes, but they also told them to round up anyone they run across during those searches. It’s not going to be very long before they’re just indiscriminate raids.
