Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of a dark chapter in Chilean history — the 1973 coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende. It's crucial that we remember this event, not just for its impact on Chile but for what it teaches us about U.S. foreign policy. I’ve recently introduced legislation to declassify documents related to Chile’s coup, and while we have made some progress getting a few pieces of information surrounding the United States’ involvement declassified, there’s still a significant need for additional transparency. We must acknowledge our country’s history of contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America. By providing full, public responsibility for our historical role, and by continuing to demonstrate with our present actions that we will not support human rights abuses, we can strengthen the relationship between the United States and Latin America.
