Technology@lemmy.world•'I'll believe it when I see it': Windows 11 users are cynical about Microsoft's promises to fix the OS and stop pushing AIEnglish
4·1 day agoThey have an (unintentional) strategy of alternating good and bad releases. So *if windows 12 comes out and it is somewhat sensible, it will be amazing when compared to win 11, and people will not wait to get off 11 onto 12.
Whereas if 12/came out right after 10, it would be compared to 10 and people would not like it as much.

For years presidents never messed with it. How come he gets to.
I think digitally signing means different things in different contexts. I made a GnuPG key but idk what I’m doing. But I use docusign all the time.
Just installed Fedora today. Can confirm, a Lemmy post and several wikis really helped me out.
I think that other distros are less like that, but experiencing breakage and having to search for solutions is a perennial problem.

2·2 days agoThank you for this! I’m going to use it as a handy checklist of things to configure, beyond what the RPMFusion wiki said to do.
I think a lot of these I will not need for my hardware, or wait to cross that bridge if I need to. But, one thing I thought was strange that the installer did not configure was hostname. So I’ll definitely copy what you did:
hostnamectl set-hostname "$HOSTNAME_SHORT" hostnamectl set-hostname "$HOSTNAME_PRETTY" --pretty(might need sudo).
Thanks!

2·2 days agoHere is what I’ve done so far with RPMFusion.
- Installed and configured the repositories via the graphical method on this page: https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration
- Add app metadata to Discover via the “AppStream metadata” section. I only needed the first command,
AppStream metadata. - Followed the instructions on https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Multimedia
- Installed Steam via Discover, button says “Install From Fedora Linux.” I guess this is --a flatpak-- included in one of the repositories? It is hard to tell what is going on under the hood.
- EDIT: Added Flathub (was not enabled by default). Now, flatpak results show up in Discover.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepoMy impression of
dnfso far is that the fact that it defaults to (y/N) and asks you more often for confirmation is unfortunate, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.Just an aside, I’ve already gotten the “Oops, we’ve encountered a problem” message, but it disappeared too quickly for me to tell what it was about. Also the start menu doesn’t open any more. (EDIT: Now it works again). So that’s weird. My two monitors were working fine at first, but now I am getting, “Couldn’t apply display configuration: Position of output HDMI-A-1 is negative, that is not supported.”
So it looks like installing Fedora/RPMFusion is not without its speedbumps, but overall pretty easy!
Wine sometimes works. Windows in VM might be possible if you have beefy hardware. With dual boot is probably the best option if you can manage the intricacies.
That app that infringes your rights is the one you need to earn a living.
“I can’t run the application you need”

2·2 days agoI hear what you’re saying, it’s just that I’ve heard different: that kde Fedora gets a lot of testing, and up-to-date packages earlier than kubuntu. Those sound like good reasons to try it out.

Linux@lemmy.world•What should I expect switching to Fedora?English
22·3 days agoExactly. That’s why I’m not using Debian in this situation. I’m thinking that fedora will strike a better balance for what I’m trying to achieve.
I don’t want the most bleeding edge KDE neon rolling release distribution because that’s hardly tested at all.

There’s got to be a better way. That is traumatic for some kids.
