Yeah I highly doubt the NRA will show any real guts but hopefully some of the serious 2A folks can revive a bit of the ‘old order’ suspicion of government at the very least. I mean the federal government is literally telling ‘agents’ they can knock down doors without warrants.

Some of it is political theater I’m sure, but unlike the abortion folks I think a fair amount of the 2A hobbyists legitimately value their freedom to carry a gun around in plain sight. Anyone with a few brain cells to knock around can see those rights are being tossed for everyone, not just minority groups. I hope I’m reading the room right and this population show some more signs of organized resistance as feds knock down doors without warrants.

I’m a bit skeptical too without seeing the study design since it seems like a big ask for the 12-15 group they’re targeting. I think I bought my first phone around 14 or 15 because my parents definitely weren’t about to pay for one. I don’t think I would have volunteered to add parental controls even for a reasonable sum.

The team will recruit from ten Bradford secondary schools, and involve around 4,000 students across the academic years 8, 9 and 10, covering ages 12-15.

A bespoke app loaded onto the teenagers’ smartphones will cap each participant’s total social media use per day, and block all social media use at nighttime.

The research will be implemented on all social media apps commonly used by this age group, from TikTok to Snapchat and Instagram, but not messaging apps such as WhatsApp.*

Current plans are to limit participants to one hour of social media a day, and block it completely between 9pm and 7am, although this is subject to change.

Half the school year groups will be randomly allocated this daily social media restriction and nighttime curfew, and the results will be compared to the remaining year groups in the trial who have no limits on social media use.

I wonder how they’re handling recruiting/incentivizing participants. Seems like it would be hard to get 4000 15 year olds from the same school system to consent to phone restrictions.

Besides the obvious it’s also heartwarming to see an example of a change of heart. Someone who realized they were on the wrong side of their own moral code and switched to helping the victims.

Someone from the electrical company who was fixing my heater informed me that it’s pronounced Sass quaa and not Sass quatch. He and his friends went on Sasquatch hunts and he gave me some good hiking recs. I haven’t been able to find his pronunciation elsewhere so I thought someone else might want to carry this important information with them.

Those first two pros, especially the second, seem really important right now. After moving it takes a few years to settle in get embedded into a new community. When civil protections fail community becomes more important. I want you to be surrounded by a network of people you trust. Though maybe you can convince some friends to move too?

For real, sometimes I feel like I am a plant with extra trappings given how much I need the sun! Be gentle to people during the short days, they should be hibernating.

This gels well with my experience and I use a similar strategy for inching out of that state— treat myself like I’m a small injured animal that will hopefully recover if I focus on providing it the stuff its body needs consistently every day. Food. Water. Sunlight. A little walk. Rinse and repeat until my brain starts to break free of the hostage spiraling state.
