61·1 day agoBecause petro companies pay off politicians and use a couple unfortunate and totally preventable incidents to make nuclear power a boogeyman even though annual deaths related to petroleum power far outweigh all deaths related to nuclear power?
Can you find any sources supporting that?
Everything I’ve come across from this millenium says otherwise. I found this article from Harvard Magazine from 2003 that talks about the archeological findings
There’s good evidence that the people that built the pyramids were not slaves, but mostly skilled seasonal workers. There is evidence of the workers having luxurious foods and decent housing in something akin to dormitories. Seems like it’s still unknown if everyone was paid in actual coin, or if some or many were doing it more for religious purposes and were just treated to good food and accommodation while they were there, though some pay rates for some workers have been found in writing. But it does seem like they were mostly rotating crews rather than people living and working there for the years or decades it took to complete them.
If they were slaves, they probably would have been there long term, and not afforded those luxuries.
Wish I had a convenient source for all that, but it’s probably buried in academic journals and papers, but this bbc article includes some of it, and I have found some terrible ad-ridden articles mentioning pay rates and such. I just remember some of that from watching YouTube videos/documentaries tbh

Formula 1@lemmy.world•Mohammed Ben Sulayem proposes removal of term limits for FIA presidents
32·3 days agoOf course he would. Because the system for “electing” the FIA president isn’t broken enough.
But if he ever stops being president, who will play with the drivers hair and pour water on their heads?

2·3 days agoConsidering all their road cars are v8, and have been for a long time, seems like it would be a good marketing move as long as the f1 engine isn’t a total dumpster fire à la the Honda in the Aston
Edit: except for the Artura, which I haven’t even heard even though they’ve been selling it since 2022. That’s a v6. Besides that, all v8 until you get to the f1, which was a BMW v12

4·8 days agoI’ve been using Manjaro for a couple years, and of course didn’t see any of the hate for it when trying to pick a distro, or for the first like 6 months of using it. But tbh the only part of my manjaro experience that isn’t fine is that they disable hardware acceleration for h.264 and h.265, with no easy way to enable it. Which is very annoying since I run a Jellyfin server on my desktop. But overall it’s been trouble-free for me.
But along with the seemingly constant power struggles over there, makes it hard to recommend. I hear endeavor OS is the new “easy” arch

2·9 days agoThat’s awesome! Unfortunately I have a pretty high hardware fail rate, at least for motherboards and gpu’s. But I also have/had a penchant for overclocking everything, so guess I’m kind of asking for it. Most spectacularly had a nvidia 780i sli motherboard let the smoke out from running a q6600 at 3.2ghz for a few years. That was a rad platform, still feel kinda bad about that one tbh

25·9 days agoI’d much rather game on old hardware or janky arm based stuff than use hardware as a service, even if it means being 10+ years behind in performance. There are so many great games that will run on pretty much anything

Games@lemmy.world•Need for Speed: Most Wanted – The game that got me into racingEnglish
2·12 days agoOkay so I spent some time driving around, and replayed some missions. The actual drifting dynamics feel how I remember, which is to say intuitive and responsive, though a little too forgiving imo. More on the “arcade” side of “simcade”. So overall good. Though I think they re-tuned the grip? Lower hp and generally unmodified cars feel way easier to initiate and hold in a drift. In low hp cars the handbrake used to rob too much of your speed and make your engine bog when you got back on power, so clutch kicking was the move. Now you really don’t need to clutch kick at all except in the super low power cars, and even then it’s usually optional. Also they gave the tofu delivery car way more steering angle, which is a positive imo.
Grip driving is definitely not this games forte. Even when a car is set up for grip, it feels like it wants to be a drift car. I can’t quite get the steering setup to make it not feel like a drift car. Every steering input when gripped feels more like trying to initiate a drift than actually turn.
So making the beginner cars easier to drift does reduce some of the progression that I really enjoyed. Still, I think it’s fun, and I’m going to do some of the new missions that have been added.

6·12 days agoI miss racing games that had real progression and plot lines. Are there any more recent big games that deliver on this? I had high hopes for the new Assetto Corsa, but sounds like they abandoned a progression system.
JDM: Japanese Drift Master does in a lot of ways, but you can burn through the story pretty fast, though I did still thoroughly enjoy it. The grip driving is kinda jank, and is pretty much unplayable with my wheel. But is a lot of fun to just drift around Japan with a controller in some heavily modified jdm legends

But I’m guessing doing air shows counts towards training hours, so they’re going to be flying those planes regardless. Still feels like a massive waste when two of them crash and burn in a show though

Yeah it’s a little different for ultras. Drafting isn’t allowed, so they play out very differently from road races, they tend to spread out. But absolutely incredible result from Maddy!
