Unpopular take: I actually found it pretty good. All characters got their screen time and the main characters all got a resolution that felt satisfying to me. The action scenes were good. I even liked the revelation of what the upside down really is, though I would’ve preferred a slightly different version of that explanation.
It’s just a much bigger country. While Europe is big, the countries are small and separated by their long national histories and unique languages. Europe is also much denser, so distances to stuff that matters are shorter.
UK: 30 miles in built-up areas, 70 miles on motorways. Most of Europe has 120 or 130 km/h (75 or 80 mph), except Germany which technically has no general speed limit on the Autobahn.

griselbrandalf@reddthat.comtoApplied Psychology@mander.xyz•There Is No Male Loneliness Crisis. What’s Actually Happening Is So Much Darker.
151·1 month agoAdding to this, and with a side note that this is not my field of expertise, my reading of a few articles from the “tsunami” of articles about male loneliness is that they don’t just focus on quantitative but also qualitative differences of social connections between men and women at large. There’s this hypothesis that close female friendships tend to be more intimate than close male friendships. This is also supported by anecdotal evidence I heard from trans-men, that the absence of love and caring in their new male-male friendships hit them like a truck after socially transitioning, compared to previous (perceived female-female /) egg-female friendships. So I don’t know whether self-reported data like number of close friends is a good metric, or if it would be more informative to ask “how many friends do you have for whom you know the names of their parents” or “how often did you talk to a friend about your feelings this month” or whatever. Again, this is all anecdotal, but this is a vibe I’m getting from other reports on this topic that I was missing in this article. Still, very good article with many valid points, particularly in the second half.

Money. Criminals and immoral people pay good money to show these ads. At least for Facebook, a court case regarding identity fraud has established that they knew quite well which ads were fishy, so they just charged those advertisers more. If I remember correctly, that amounted to about 10% of Facebook’s revenue. It will be a similar case for Google, I assume. Sketchy ads pay too well to remove all of them and laws make it so the platform is only liable if they don’t take it down after receiving notice of every single sketchy ad. Google, Facebook, and the others are all well near monopoly and built deep moats, so they don’t really have to fear losing customers, because there’s no simple alternative.
