1·2 days agoThat would be a great application for it! Okay, I’m swayed in the other direction. For stuff like schools, churches, etc, I can see it making sense. Especially if the machines aren’t hard to maintain.

Technology@lemmy.world•This Autonomous Snow Blower Shovels on its Own, Recharges Itself, and Keeps GoingEnglish
3·2 days agoYeah, that’s fair. Snow blowers as a personal purchase have always felt silly to me, since if needed you could always pay for a shovel/plow service that just come when it snows, so you don’t have an expensive appliance sitting around that might barely be used. Now I’m wondering what the cost comparison would look like between the two. I suppose it depends on how much snow you usually get

Trans@lemmy.blahaj.zone•If my birth state won't allow me to change the gender marker on my birth certificate, what do I do?English
2·2 days agoWell fuck. I am intrigued by the notion of changing the name only when I can’t change the marker, and then updating both anywhere else where I can. I wonder if there is any legal assistance nearby that can help me with the nuances of the forms and stuff

14·2 days agoYeah, I’ve had that thought too - probably better to keep a low profile right now.
On the other hand, although I don’t pass now, if I do eventually, I don’t want to out myself to every cop and TSA agent, you know?
I have some French Canadian ancestry, so I’m working on applying for my Canadian citizenship by descent. (Maybe another reason not to mess with my documents rn?)
Blessedly, I’m no longer in Indiana, and Michigan has much better civil rights protections for trans folks

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•To those who are new to this whole fediverse/threadiverse/this thing, how has your experience been?English
37·3 days agoI’ve been on the Fediverse since mid-2023, and I’m sticking around!
I bailed on Reddit, FB, and IG, and I’m only on Mastodon and Piefed now. I find that not being on algorithm-driven social media makes me less angry, and I have a much easier time avoiding getting caught up in a mindless scrolling marathon.
I like the ability to filter out by keywords, it makes for a much more pleasant experience
As far as improvements, my main complaint is that I wish there were more people and that the people who are here comment more. Bigger isn’t necessarily better, but there are a lot of communities that just don’t have enough people posting and commenting to make things feel lively yet.

81·6 days agoOh friend. I suggest you educate yourself, you don’t know how wrong you are.
During the 18th and most of the 19th centuries, the United States had limited regulation of immigration and naturalization at a national level. Under a mostly prevailing “open border” policy, immigration was generally welcomed, although citizenship was limited to “white persons” as of 1790, and naturalization was subject to five-year residency requirement as of 1802. Passports and visas were not required for entry into America; rules and procedures for arriving immigrants were determined by local ports of entry or state laws. Processes for naturalization were determined by local county courts.[1][2][3]

161·6 days agoBorders are intrinsic to humanity? Citation extremely needed.
In the US, we had open borders for a long time, and there are many places in the world currently that don’t have border controls. Capital flows freely around the world, why shouldn’t people be allowed to?
And respectfully, you don’t know the extent of my activism based on one meme I shared. I advocate for many things. And for what it’s worth, I think it’s more likely that strict borders would be a contributing factor leading to a WWIII. All the more reason to get rid of them.

3·6 days agoIn the US, you usually only get paid time off if you’re in a full-time, salaried position. Even then, most people only get two or three weeks, and it accrues over time, so you have to save it up for winter holidays, etc

2·8 days agoI found out that my great great grandmother had a name that starts with the first letter of my deadname, and it felt right to me! I thought about the girl name that my parents would have used, but I just don’t feel like it suits me

I don’t use them often, but I think they’re still useful. Mostly at work meetings and when I’m at conferences, exchanging business cards is probably the easiest way to quickly share contact info
