3·29 days agoa lack of definitions of terms. Is a town with 150 people “urban” because you have a street address and most people don’t work in another town/city, is it “suburban” because you need to go to a different town to buy groceries, or is it “rural” because that’s how most people who live there self-identify?
The question asked how you would describe your community, but I would call my entire city my community which has a mix of all three options. My house is single-family detached but sits in an urban area, but there’s a suburb right across the street from me.
Emphasis on nice. I would much rather receive a single pair of nice merino wool socks or something with a neat design than a 10 pack of Walmart white crew socks.

7·2 months agoOne of our recent council meetings had a developer wanting to rezone a lot to medium density but needed a variance to allow for less parking given the size of the parcel.
Council unanimously approved the rezoning citing the need for more medium density projects, but were completely divided on the vote for the parking variance. They could not fathom that a developer would know best how many parking spaces would be needed to still be functional and profitable. All they wanted was to reduce the requirement from 1.5 spaces per unit down to 1.25 spaces per unit. A decrease of like 9 spaces total.
Luckily the variance was eventually approved but not before a lot of debate and grandstanding about what people are supposed to do with their cars.

7·2 months agoI found it quite the opposite of annoying. This episode had some beautiful cinematography showing the south america trek to the point I was questioning if this entire thing was funded by tourism boards. Maybe not the most exciting to watch but I’ve mostly come to expect as much.

8·2 months agoDon’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
CMHC already has programs available to fully fund non-market housing initiatives as long as you can meet certain requirements. One of the biggest issues is that nearly everybody sees housing as an investment and not simply a shelter so if there’s no money in it then they aren’t interested.

3·2 months agoGiven that they freed all the zoo animals, I think it’s safe to assume that all farm animals have also been released. They would need to randomly come across a chicken’s nest first which I don’t think is sustainable.
Biking through unplowed snow sucks, but it’s hardly impossible. The worst part about it is having to deal with traffic at the same time
