I personally understand why people don’t want to demolish a system from which they prosper and within which they enjoy a high living standard.

I have heard about this example of course, but there are two issues with using this one:

1. Most of the prosperity and reduction in poverty under Mao came at the expense of millions of lives.

The US is certainly the most influential of the Americas. When people refer to “America” they mean USA. When people say “North America” they mean USA and Canada, even though Mexico is technically part of North America. I am neither American, nor part of the Americas.
