Los Angeles is not a desert- it’s a Mediterranean climate. It has a wide variety of soil types, both well draining and expansive soils that absorb absorb compacted soils that don’t absorb water.

It used to have many wetlands that absorbed water and sediment. A few areas are left in west LA but the development of the city over the wetlands with poor drainage plans is the issue. Instead of making a network of areas that drain water and create green space engineers decided to just push all the water into one giant channel.

I got pretty bad high blood pressure, but only diastolic was high, from long Covid and I had similar symptoms. It took forever to figure it out because apparently nurses sometimes assume if only diastolic is high that you were moving your arm or something.

Do you get blurry vision and headaches? I figured out it was from inflammation in my arteries, and antinflamatories for a week actually ended my long COVID symptoms. I’m now back to working out and full energy after 2 and a half years.

I also think it is the best time in the history of the world to learn how to run your own business and manage your finances because all the information is available online (although you have to filter out the people selling courses, financial products and clickbait crap)

I started my business by using YouTube videos and message boards to learn what I needed to know.

The secret to extending your flexibility for getting up and down as a lazy person is a low platform western bed or a Japanese bed. It makes getting up and down a part of your routine.

Also overall for foot flexibility and knees health barefoot walking and barefoot shoes make a huge difference. I use a treadmill barefoot a few times a week, and barefoot shoes when I can.

It’s pretty quick. Insects come back in about two years, although it can be a little weird- you may get massive population growth of bugs you aren’t thrilled about ( we had a year of millions of earwigs first)
then predators (one year was baby lizard mania )
Bumblebees really took off about 3 years in. Birds too.

I think power and money corrupts people. Plenty of people who started out as honest business people turn into monsters. As you move up the ladder, less and less people are honest with you. Some are climbing the ladder because they are unhappy and that definitely makes things worse, they think money or power will make them feel better, when actually I’ve found living with less and doing things yourself is ultimately more satisfying.

Anecdotally, I personally felt how wealth corrupted me - when my economy car was totaled and my insurance rental gave me a Mercedes because they were out of reasonable models . After a week of driving it I started feeling like I was better than other people on the road. Luckily I got a replacement crappy hatchback and became a normal person again.

I haven’t been pooping in a banana hole. Instead I’ve been in the battle against squirrels. I’m in a great biodiversity hotspot so I have both ground squirrels ( who’ve decided to adapt and climb my fruit trees) and tree squirrels.
I’ve been excited to eat my nectaplums, so I was cautious and bagged them when they were very small. The squirrels have decided that even though they can’t get into the bags, I deserve punishment so they still knock them out of the tree still green in the bags, and leave a few tooth marks in each.

I just bought some pie plates to try and add baffles and I fully expect some new horror they think of next.

Plant plants to attract birds that eat mosquitoes- where I live, that’s hummingbirds. They eat their weight in insects daily, not just nectar. Sages are a good choice. Add a bat box to your property- bats also eat mosquitoes. Put some fish in your pond that eat mosquito larvae. Also add more aeration to your pond to discourage breeding, I like solar powered aerators.

I’ve had a ton of success with bringing back bugs. First off, no pesticides or herbicides. Second, diverse plants with at least 1/2 native, and a decent amount of flowers, plants in the sage family and sunflower family are good choices for a quick impact. Third, mulch, and have areas with dead sticks and wood, rock piles etc.

My property started out with only earwigs, roly-polies and invasive grass. They sprayed everything for spiders.

It’s been 6 years and I have multiple species of bumblebees, flower flies, butterflies, moths, wasps, etc.
