In some extremist religious movements, yes. Women get killed in the West and in the East for the same reasons: pathriarchy. The west is doing moderately better very recently (in historical times). But in the grand scheme of things, women have it bad everywhere, and the means of oppression are culture-bound.

I live in a western country with a big Muslim community. Most of the women who cover their hair do it out of their own free choice, because its part of their culture, just like western women do their own women-specific things
