The administrators of the mutual fund still make a bet that their income (mainly the money they charge members/customers) will meet or exceed the claims they pay out, no? They might not have a profit motive, but that doesn’t change the basic economics of needing income to be >= expenses.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The main reason not to drive in the snow is the way other people drive in the snow.
1·4 days agoIt doesn’t really make a difference which wheels are driven seeing as the truck was braking, not accelerating. And having all of the weight in the front makes sense if the bed is actually used for hauling stuff.
Most people are recommending that you bury a conduit, and it’s good advice, but also be aware that direct-bury ethernet cable is available that can be used without conduit.
And they’re getting away with it because they understand how the legal system works (or doesn’t).
Seems like those schools were successful in teaching them how our legal system works and how to use it to advance their own goals. Seems like the only thing they didn’t learn is ethics, but their understanding of our legal system is pretty solid.

Television@piefed.social•Warner Bros. Discovery Officially Rejects Paramount’s Revised Offer, Stands by Netflix Deal

That’s one of their given reasons for declining the offer. They’re not framing it as a good thing.
12gbps could be useful if you use port expanders to put dozens of drives on the same port, but without a port expander you’re right you wouldn’t saturate the 6gbps channel.

News@lemmy.world•ICE plans $100m yearlong ‘wartime recruitment’ media blitz to attract new agents
4·1 month agoThat’s just a few cents per person… If overcharging wasn’t such a big problem, it would probably buy a single dose of Tylenol for everyone.
If they have video of you leaving the note, then they also have video of the truck being parked, sitting there without being hit, and the owner returning without any real incident.
And from experience, the cops would tell the owner of the truck to contact their insurance, and if pushed, the most they’d do is file a report. There wouldn’t be any investigation, especially without evidence of damage.
It’s not even about the size or complexity of the project - the code in question is wrapped in an
unsafe{}block, so no one should be expecting it to have the guarantees you’d normally get from rust. It’s ragebait.
every scientist on planet earth is wrong about basic physics
Until someone comes up with a unified theory that works for both Newtonian mechanics and quantum mechanics I’d say this is true - we’re all wrong about basic physics.
And if you prefer the
cat | grepordering,< file.txt grep foois also valid.
LSI cards are generally easy to switch to IT mode. You should be able to find a guide on servethehome.com for your model.
This, but if you already have a SAS card in RAID mode you might be able to flash IT (AKA HBA) mode firmware instead of buying a new card.
Also, SAS cables fit SATA drives, but not vice versa. So no need to buy new cables.
Not to defend US power plugs (the UK plug is clearly superior) but this sounds like a problem with your adapter. US plugs rely on the socket having enough friction to hold the plug. It’s obviously not the best design decision, but I’ve only had issues with cheap adapters and >50 year old sockets (which are hard to find because they tend to get replaced during remodeling).
The sparks are also less of an issue with 110v.
Yeah, the form factor, HDMI-CEC support, and integration with other valve hardware are what really sell it. But it’s not going to be underpriced for the specs, like consoles tend to be.
RAM costs will likely affect both custom built machines and the steam machine equally.

Regardless of who owns it or what they do with it, those GPUs will get sold on the used market with plenty of life left. Older AI GPUs, networking equipment (eg 100GbE), SAS drives, etc have been easy to find on eBay and other sites for a long time, because data centers replace hardware long before it’s expected to fail.
