What is that? A gravity bong?
We called it a gravity bong, but I don’t know why. The physics of it seem to have a lot more to do with air pressure than gravity.
a true gravity bong would be filled with water, a hole releases the water, drawing smoke into the container, if you get the drain flow correct yop get very dense clouds.
My guess is when we packed a bowl and lifted the bottle you could see it raise the water inside the bottle, then watched the water drop down, via gravity but not really, as it sucked in the smoke. More to due with pressure differences as you said.
In germany we called that an “Eimer”, meaning bucket, when i was around that age. Essentially yeah its sort of a gravity bong. The appeal is that you can macguyver one as a teen without reliable access to smoking accessories.
Take any bucket, or bucket like container, fill it with water. Cut the bottom out of a plastic bottle, take some aluminum foil to mold a heat resistant headpiece/sieve for the bottle. Prepare your smoke and fill it in the headpiece, sink the bottle until a few centimeters still stick out, put the headpiece on and light it up while slowly and steadily raising the bottle until only a few centimeters are below water. Take off the mouthpiece and proceed with the picture, basically force loading your lungs while you lower the bottle again.
A lot of bang for your buck and you can dispose of it easily.

I was gonna say. Often slumped backwards after taking a hit, lights out, day over, good night.
I’d like to add that it tastes like shit (if I remember correctly)
We used to call it a bucket, we made them with those big 3 litre cider bottles, it was horrible.
