High-speed 3D printing has just gotten a lot faster. Researchers from Tsinghua University in China have developed a new high-speed printing technology capable of creating complex millimeter-scale objects in just 0.6 seconds. Traditional 3D printing is often slow because it builds objects one thin layer at a time. While a newer method called volumetric printing, which uses light to shape an object, has become progressively faster in recent years, it has hit a major speed bump.

    The clever trick of moving the projection instead of the target could probably be scaled up with digital micromirror devices, like DLP projector chips. They withstand an obscene amount of visible light and bounce it off a zillion tilting shards of silver. Some prototype lightfield HMDs use that to form multiple adjacent full-res images, within a couple milliseconds, without using a lens. So an ultraviolet source and a couple fixed mirrors would presumably let one chip blast this resin from at least 90 degrees around.
